The Mustang Nero hotel - Bangkok

Located just 2 stations away from Thong Lor BTS station, the centralised art district of the sleepless city - The Mustang Nero hotel is basically a hidden gem in the Phra Kanong precinct, still orbiting slightly along the line.

Full black exterior of 3 floors, and a whole lot of trees surrounding which makes it hard to miss the building when turned into the road. Whilst the interior charms their visitors with vintage appliances and odd choice of decorations, still with the whole lot of plants everywhere concept. A literal concrete jungle, in and out.

This amazing little art suite consists of three floors and 6 animal themed bedrooms to choose upon reservation - Magic Dragon, Black Bird, The Wolf, The Horse plus the newly launched themes The Zebra Song, and The Lion Song. Dropping them an email is probably the best way to get a speedy reply and also receiving the reservation form. Breakfast is included in the rates/per night of 1500 Thai Baht to 1600 Thai Baht, depending on the choice of the theme, an additional of the 3rd guest requires extra charges ranging from 700 Thai Baht to 800 Thai Baht. Truthfully, my attention was drawn by the pictures posted of the breakfast the hotel serves before I sent my email for reservation - cafes-like food plating filled with greens, fresh fruits on the side, and coffee, using appealing dining wares.

Getting to this place isn't too tough - crossing a really busy road with seemingly endless traffic going on, then going through mini markets. There's a map on their Facebook page and/or just navigate the way using a map phone application instead because looking for the place the first time slightly wearisome with baggages.

There's a resident cat in the hotel owned by Joy, which the hotel was originally a design studio and the separated huge room is for all her faux taxidermy animals. The room is always unlocked for visitors to look around her decorations, and the cat would hide behind the racks once the door opens, not sure to scare people off or actually blending in.

The generosity doesn't stop at their hospitality and the unconventional aesthetics of the hotel, it continues on the dining table as breakfast. Upon completing the reservation form, we were required to go down a checklist of preferences for breakfast as it is included in the service - vegetarian, yes to pork, yes to fish, or filling in the blank yourself.

My friend and I were in awe for a good 2 minutes during breakfast time, taking pictures of the VSCO filter friendly scene in which the colours were extremely buoyant - greens with eggs, coffee, fruits, and amazing dishware choices. Exactly the picture I've been waiting to see ever since I sent the reservation email. The old school manual toaster was amusing, we toasted extra bread to eat even though we were full.

My Bangkok companion, Cher

We booked The Horse after much contemplation - white sheets, wide space, and lots of areca palm trees. This spacey room is apparently the most chosen room for photography projects by local creative medias, the selling point is definitely the lounge area. There's a television in the room too but it didn't really work.

Though the room that we have chosen might get a little eerie when night falls, and the lights are all yellow. Yet when day breaks this place is stunningly breathtaking, and very Instagram worthy. It feels a lot like home at the breakfast table but the lack of white light in the room gets on my nerves a little during my two nights stay here. We had all the lights on to sleep, Asian single and non-religious girl problem.

The accessories for the room key were very Alice in Wonderland-like, bronze big O key ring with really intricate room key and a number charm indicating the room number. The toiletries too aren't standardised, the designs and furnishings are all accommodated to the room's theme. This hotel impresses with the attentiveness and mindfulness of decorations in the premise, precise themes and precise placement. Though it gets a little exhausting to have so many things around in the bedroom but aesthetic is essential.

There's a really good localised cafe that serves really good cha yen (Thai iced milk tea) down the corner, we went on a hunt for the place after they delivered iced coffee to the hotel. Convenience stores serve super good instant cha yen as well, but it only kicks in after being washed down by ice.

Bangkok accommodation is relatively affordable with great hospitality, plus their concepts are impressively crisp and fresh. The Mustang Nero is more than just a boutique hotel, it felt a lot like home with the people there offering you iced coffee or cha yen (fav), making sure your breakfast is actually perfect, and telling you to get going to the airport just so you don't miss your flight. Definitely what I needed, to not miss my return flight home.

Will be back soon Bangkok!
